My Story

Hello! I'm Dee McDermott, and my journey in education spans 36 years, marked by a relentless pursuit of knowledge and a commitment to lifelong learning. My educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, a Master’s degree in School Counseling, and additional licensure and training as a Reading Specialist. I've delved deep into multi-sensory reading instruction and immersed myself in the Science of Reading, continually refining my craft to better serve my students.

Beyond academia, I've collaborated with the University of Pennsylvania on studies related to childhood depression and resilience, guiding groups through their esteemed program, The Penn Project. My expertise extends to the realm of Social and Emotional Learning, where I've facilitated numerous impactful sessions.

Personally, I've navigated the challenges of parenting with firsthand experience. My husband Paul and I have been happily married for 33 years, and we are proud parents of two adult children. My son's journey with dysgraphia and reading fluency fueled my advocacy efforts, leading to tangible changes within his school environment. Witnessing his success after implementing innovative interventions solidified my belief in the power of tailored support.

Throughout my career, I've authored countless Reevaluation Reports, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and conducted thorough baseline assessments and progress monitoring. My dedication transcends age and ability, having taught students from elementary through high school, each with unique learning differences.

The heart of my work lies in empowering students to advocate for themselves, fostering independence and confidence alongside academic growth. I've employed various renowned reading programs, including SRA, Fundations, and Heggerty, always tailoring my approach to meet the individual needs of each learner.

Teaching isn't just a profession for me; it's a passion that resonates deeply. While I may miss the classroom, I remain an avid reader and cherish moments spent with my family at the shore or exploring new destinations.
